Shape

The shape of the diamond or gemstone refers to the simple face-up outline or appearance of the stone. Common shapes include Round, Heart, Pear, Princess, Oval, Cushion, etc. Please note that the shape is not the same as the cut.

Measurements

To specify their dimensions, diamonds are represented by three measurements. For fancy-shaped diamonds, the measurement is in the format of length x width x depth. The length indicates the larger dimension when viewed from the top, while the width denotes the smaller dimension. The depth represents the height of the gemstone from the culet to the table. These measurements help determine the diamond's length-to-width ratio and can serve as an indicator of its cut quality.

For round diamonds, the measurement specifies diameter 1 x diameter 2 x depth. Round diamonds are not perfectly round, as they are cut by humans. Hence, they receive two diameter measurements to indicate the maximum and minimum diameters. Although there might be slight variations between these two measurements, the difference should be minimal.

Culet

Located at the bottom tip of a gemstone, the culet is a tiny facet. The best culet is either pointed or very small, usually graded as "small" or "none."

Table

The largest facet on the top of a gemstone is referred to as the table. Table % indicates the table width as a percentage of the girdle diameter.

Depth

The height of a gemstone from the culet to the table is known as its depth. Depth % is the measurement of the diamond's height as a percentage of the girdle diameter.

Symmetry

Diamond symmetry describes the alignment of the facets on the diamond's surface. Proper alignment is essential for optimal light reflection. Symmetry is graded on a scale from Excellent, Very Good, Good. Symmetry grades of Good or higher have minimal impact on the diamond's brilliance and are best suited for the finest quality jewelry.

Polish

Diamond polish refers to the quality of the facets' finish on the diamond's surface. Polish grades are classified as Excellent, Very Good, Good. A Good or higher polish grade minimally impacts the diamond's brilliance, making it a suitable choice for high-quality jewelry.

Fluorescence

Diamond fluorescence refers to how a diamond responds to ultraviolet light. In diamonds with strong or very strong fluorescence, there might be some interference with the flow of light, resulting in a milky or oily appearance.

L-W Ratio

The length-to-width ratio of a fancy-shaped diamond indicates how elongated or square it appears when viewed from the top. Personal preferences differ, with some individuals favoring more elongated shapes and others preferring equal or square shapes. The most popular length-to-width ratios for fancy shapes are outlined below.

Example: A princess-cut diamond measuring 5.05 mm long and 5.00 mm wide has a length-to-width ratio of 1.01 (5.05/5.00), resulting in a perfectly square appearance.

Most popular length-to-width ratios:
Princess: 1.00-1.05
Radiant: 1.00-1.05
Asscher: 1.00-1.05
Cushion: 1.00-1.05
Heart: 0.90-1.10
Emerald: 1.30-1.40
Oval: 1.30-1.70
Pear: 1.45-1.75
Marquise: 1.75-2.30

Moreover, we offer a selection of recycled diamonds, exemplifying our dedication to environmentally friendly choices.

Report

A diamond certificate or grading report provides an expert opinion on the quality of a diamond and is issued by an independent gemology lab. Certified gemologists, using specialized tools, measure the diamond's weight and dimensions and evaluate its cut, color, and clarity. True Sanity's diamonds are certified by globally recognized gem grading labs like GIA, along with holding the Sustainably Rated Diamond Certification. If the certificate is not available online, feel free to contact us for an electronic copy.

Carat

The carat is a unit of measurement used to determine the weight of a diamond, equivalent to 200 milligrams or 0.2 grams. It's crucial to note that carat weight and diamond size are related but not interchangeable. Carat solely measures the diamond's weight, not its physical size.

Actual Diamond Size on Size 6 Hand

Color

The color of a diamond is its inherent shade, which remains constant over time. Colorless diamonds allow more light to pass through, resulting in a dazzling display of sparkle and fire that sets them apart from colored diamonds.

Near-colorless. Slightly detected color—a good value.

Cut

Diamond cut refers to the specific angles and proportions of the stone, including its depth, width, and the uniformity of facets. This aspect significantly influences the diamond's visual appeal and how well it reflects and disperses light.

Clarity

In diamond terminology, clarity refers to the presence of impurities, both external and internal, within the stone. When a rough diamond is extracted from deep within the earth, it often contains minute traces of natural elements trapped inside. These unique natural flaws or inclusions contribute to the distinct identity of each diamond.
