July Birthstone
The Ruby
Laid Bare
The July birthstone is ruby — ratnaraj, the king of precious stones. Second in hardness only to diamond. First in price among all colored gems. The stone that ancient warriors embedded in their own flesh for invincibility. We just put it in honest jewelry and tell you what it costs.
What Is the July Birthstone?
The July birthstone is ruby — the red variety of the mineral corundum, which is the same species that produces sapphire. Every color of corundum except red is classified as sapphire. Only the red earns its own name. That distinction tells you everything about the reverence this stone commands.
Ruby gets its color from trace amounts of chromium — the same element responsible for emerald's green and alexandrite's color change. The more chromium present, the deeper the red and the stronger the natural fluorescence that makes fine rubies appear to glow from within, as though a coal were burning at the center of the stone. In Sanskrit, ruby is called ratnaraj — king of precious stones. In Latin, ruber, simply: red.
At 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, ruby is surpassed only by diamond. It has no cleavage — meaning it won't split along planes the way diamond can — which gives it exceptional toughness for everyday wear. Ruby has been the July birthstone across every historical birthstone list ever compiled: ancient, traditional, and modern. No other stone has ever held the July position.
July Birthstone Meaning & Symbolism
Passion, Protection, and the Power of Blood
Ruby's color is blood's color, and every culture that encountered it drew the obvious connection. The stone was believed to hold the power of life itself. Ancient Indian texts said ruby could generate enough heat to boil water. The Greeks thought it could melt wax. Warriors in Burma didn't just wear rubies — they had them surgically embedded into their flesh, believing that only stones that became part of the body could confer true invincibility. Wearing one on your armor wasn't enough.
"The deep red sunrise within a perfect ruby."
— Rumi, 13th-century Persian poet (the Sunrise Ruby's namesake)Hindu texts describe the Kalpa Tree — a symbolic offering to the gods — as made entirely of precious stones, with rubies as its fruit. The Harita Smriti promised that anyone who offered a ruby to the god Krishna would be reborn as a powerful emperor. Kublai Khan, the Mongol emperor of China, reportedly offered an entire city in exchange for a single large ruby. He was refused.
The 15th and 40th Anniversary Stone
Ruby is the traditional gemstone for the 15th and 40th wedding anniversaries. It is also, alongside diamond, the most symbolically loaded engagement stone — representing a love that burns rather than merely endures.
The History of the July Birthstone
Rubies were traded along the North Silk Road in China as early as 200 BCE. Chinese nobles embedded them in their armor and buried them under building foundations for prosperity. But the stone's deepest historical roots lie in Myanmar's Mogok Valley — the "Valley of Rubies" — where mining has been documented for over 800 years. The Mogok region, with its weathered marble geology and ancient Buddhist temples, has produced roughly 90% of the world's finest pigeon blood rubies.
In medieval Europe, rubies surpassed all other gemstones in royal favor. They were believed to cure inflammatory diseases, soothe anger, predict misfortune by darkening in color, and ensure the wearer's land and rank could never be taken. Queen Victoria received a ruby and diamond brooch from Prince Albert in 1849 — one of the British Crown's most treasured pieces.
The most expensive ruby ever sold is the Sunrise Ruby — a 25.59-carat unheated Burmese pigeon blood ruby, named after a Rumi poem, set in a Cartier ring. It sold at Sotheby's Geneva in 2015 for $30.3 million, or roughly $1.2 million per carat. In 2023, the Estrela de FURA — a 52.22-carat Mozambican ruby — broke that record at $35 million. And in an entirely different register, Dorothy's ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz (1939) sit in the Smithsonian — made of sequins, not rubies, but no less iconic for it.
Ruby also made scientific history: the first laser ever built, in 1960, used the red fluorescent light emitted by a ruby crystal. The technology descended directly from the same chromium-fired luminescence that gives the gem its internal glow.
July Birthstone Color
Ruby's color spectrum runs from pinkish-red through orange-red to deep, saturated crimson — but the most valued shade has a name that's become legendary: pigeon blood red. The term was first used in 1829 to describe the finest Mogok rubies. It denotes a pure, vivid red with a slight purple or blue undertone and strong fluorescence — a color so saturated it seems to burn from within.
Chromium is the architect. Higher chromium concentration produces deeper reds and stronger fluorescence. But chromium also creates internal stress fractures, which is why large, clean rubies are extraordinarily rare — the very element that creates the color also compromises the crystal's integrity. Gem-quality rubies above three carats with strong color and few inclusions are genuine geological accidents.
Most commercial rubies undergo heat treatment to improve color and clarity — removing purple or brown tints and dissolving needle-like inclusions called "silk." This treatment is stable, permanent, and universally accepted. Untreated rubies with natural pigeon blood color command the highest premiums. Ruby holds the highest per-carat price of any colored gemstone, regularly exceeding diamond at equivalent weights.
Where Rubies Are Born
Five Ruby Origins, Five Personalities
Same mineral. Different soil, different light, different character in every stone.
Burma (Mogok)
The Standard · Pigeon Blood
The world's benchmark. 800+ years of mining. Vivid pigeon blood red with strong fluorescence from the marble host rock. The original Mogok mines are largely depleted. Museum-grade stones.
Mozambique
The New Force · Rich Reds
Montepuez mines produce rubies compared to Mogok's finest. The Estrela de FURA (52.22ct, $35M) came from here. Darker, iron-rich reds. Now the world's largest producer by volume.
Vietnam
Luc Yen · Purplish Reds
Northern Vietnam's rainforest mountains yield rubies with red to purplish-red hues. Discovered in the late 20th century. Often compared to — though rarely matching — the best Burmese material.
Sri Lanka
Ceylon · Pink-Reds
Lighter, pinker rubies — sometimes straddling the line between ruby and pink sapphire. Highly transparent. Historically significant. Sri Lanka has been a gem island for 2,000+ years.
Madagascar
Emerging · Varied Quality
A newer source producing a wide quality range. Some exceptional stones rival the best from anywhere. The island's complex geology yields surprising variety in tone and saturation.

How to Care for Your July Birthstone Ruby
Ruby is the second-hardest natural gemstone. At 9 Mohs with no cleavage, it's almost indestructible in normal wear — harder than emerald, sapphire, and aquamarine. Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are safe for most rubies unless the stone has been fracture-filled or cavity-filled, which should be disclosed at purchase.
Most rubies have been heat-treated — a stable, permanent enhancement that's standard in the industry. Untreated rubies command higher prices but look visually identical after treatment. Store separately from diamonds (the only thing harder), and have settings checked periodically. A well-set ruby ring is one of the most durable pieces of fine jewelry you can own.
Nocturnal Luxury, Radical Transparency
Ruby has been the gemstone of kings, warriors, and emperors for millennia. The pricing has often reflected that — opaque, intimidating, designed to keep you from asking questions. We think the king of precious stones deserves a house that treats its buyers like adults. Every TrueSanity ruby piece ships with a Transparency Manifest that shows the stone cost, the artisan labor, the logistics, and our protocol fee. Because knowing what you're paying for is a form of power too.

Nearly Indestructible
9 on Mohs with no cleavage — second only to diamond. Ruby can handle daily wear, impacts, and temperature changes that would damage softer colored gems. Built for a lifetime.
Simple Cleaning
Warm soapy water and a soft brush. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are safe for most rubies. If your stone is fracture-filled (we'll tell you), stick to warm water only.
Know the Treatment
Most rubies are heat-treated — stable, permanent, industry-standard. Untreated rubies cost more but look identical. Every TrueSanity ruby discloses its treatment status on the Manifest.
